Growing up around ponds and small lakes in Missouri, I have always been less than comfortable with the concrete and chlorine substitutes. I hate what the chlorine does to my eyes, skin, lungs, but more importantly, the difference between the man made environment of  plastic or concrete and a natural environment with plants, birds, crickets or katydids singing, soft surfaces under foot.

This strikes me as one of the best trends to see develop, natural designs for the recreational needs that humans have, as opposed to the environmentally destructive pools, ball courts and of course golf courses that have taken up so much space and used so much water and added so many chemicals to the watersheds.
