International corporations have a lot of hurdles to jump, some of which are the result of new technologies butting heads with older mores, myriad cultural and legal differences. You wouldn’t think that a kit to determine the sex of an unborn child would cause a major problem but in India, the differences in earning potential of boys and the costs of a dowry for girls result in a difference in birth rates and laws that outlaw the technology that allows determining the sex of the fetus.

Google India cut the ads (which didn’t allow for direct shipping of the kits to India) but new ones reappeared the following day. Whether Google India will comply with Indian law or attempt to fight it I don’t know. I do suspect that whether Google, Yahoo and other internationals comply, people who want to determine the sex of their unborn children will find a way.
