There seems to be nothing less effective than the well intentioned, but utterly uninspiring inspirational poster. Every time I see one on the faux-wood paneled walls of some pathetic office the only thing I can think of is my cheesy Amway selling uncle trying to indoctrinate me into his sales cult, while I mentally keep track of the times he repeats the phrases, “Super” and “ Stinkin’ Thinkin’.” Arrrrrrrggggghhhh, I’m squirming in my seat just thinking about it.
Right Brain Terrain has taken up the daunting task of revamping the once relevant motivational poster. They have applied a new aesthetic, stripped off the tacky glossy finish and plastic frame, and there doesn’t seem to be a photo of a mountain climber to be found or catchy phrase to be read. The designs are clever and the graphics are more metaphorical than literal.
Their website says,” AMPs are not intended to inspire one to get off the couch and run a marathon. We believe they serve as subtle reminders of our imperfect nature or of our personal victories. They can be our cheerleaders on good days and our coaches on bad ones. They are positive decorations for our occasionally monotonous lives. They are wall coverings to hide the hole you punched when your best friend crashed your car.”
Visually interesting, original, and yes, motivational; these posters by artist and company founder Frederic Terral, are truly a breath of fresh air.
