Newly designed packaging may make a common tool obsolete. General Electric’s new Caulk Singles completely eliminate the need for a caulking gun. Each caulk container doubles as a dispenser. If the packages function as promised, those who already own traditional caulk guns may continue to purchase the tubes common on hardware store shelves today, but those without the tool have little reason to buy one when one type of caulk doesn’t require it. If performance is equal, convenience always wins. This new product design demonstrates the vulnerability of a wide range of manufactured items and industry staples which could be anachronisms on any given morning. This particular market changer was developed by Momentive Performance Materials and reportedly contains “geometric bellows and other hidden mechanisms.” I’m sure that all of that spell patent and may leave other caulk sellers scrambling to have their own applicator containers.
