Throughout history there has not been anything as misunderstood as our perception of life, at least to the scientific community. There are more conflicting theories about life as we know it, than there are scientists. Carol Cleland, teacher of philosophy at the University of Colorado and NASA employee, has an intresting plan: Scientists should give up on looking for a definition of life. She says that they(the scientific community) can't even begin to understand what life really is until they find forms of life profoundly different from those found here on Earth. Only when we can compare alien life to our own, can we begin to understand the true nature of being.
