I’m going to go out on a limb and say that 99.9% of people reading this know what a flash mob is. For the one or two people who have been away on sabbatical at the end of the earth somewhere without internet…  THIS is a particularly elaborate and fun one.

Well the concept of a bunch of people coming together, at an agreed time, to do something entertaining has been has been evolved into a fun way to support your community.

Cash Mobs” have been sprouting up across the county and it seems like they would be a local business owners lucky day! The concept is pretty simple. It’s about choosing a store, then at an agreed time, a bunch of people show up, spend money, meet new people, then go share a drink and show off their purchases… All while stimulating the local economy in a fun social way.

One of the innovators of this movement has some suggested rules:  “THESE ARE JUST SUGGESTED RULES!!! Feel free to change them and let us know if your changes are better and why they work. We’re always interested in variations and suggestions! 1) The mob date must be announced at least a week in advance via Twitter. 2) The location at which to meet will be announced, but not the specific business to support. 3) The amount to spend will not be more than $20, although people can spend more if they wish. 4) The business must have products for both men and women. 5) The business must be locally owned. 6) The business owner must give back to the community in some way. 7) The business owner must approve the CashMob before the mob is announced. 8) The business must be within one block of a locally-owned watering hole. 9) Cash Mobbers must join us for celebratory drinks after the successful mob. 10) The cash mob will occur during the evening on a weekday or on a weekend. 11) Pictures will be posted to the blog after the CashMob. 12) Parking or public transportation must be available. At the mob, there are three rules: 1. Spend $20; 2. Meet three people you didn’t know before; 3. HAVE FUN!!!”

This a perfect example of something we would put in our We Are Family™ wave. This wave is all about a sense of community and belonging. Not only do Cash Mobs bring people together to meet and shop -it’s doing it in a fun grassroots way. Most people are willing and proud to give back to their local economy in whatever small way they can. Here is an idea that does all that, while channeling the essence of this wave, which is: finding identity through commonality.
